While I know my frequency of blogs may look like that sometimes, I just have been addicted lately to Wren's Nest (http://www.witchvox.com/xwren...).

01.19.04 (6:33 am) [edit]

How DC responds to a dusting of snow
01.09.04 (9:51 am) [edit]
* some, umm, brainless person, decided he could speed through and wound up on the subway tracks near my stop to get to work
* they stopped the trains a few stops before that and did a shuttle service using busses
* I got onto the shuttle bus near someone else who takes the same commuter bus I do, we decided we would not make it but would need to take the next one
* the transit system was pulling drivers from everywhere so we had someone who did not know the roads in that area ... at one point the bus riders were asked how to get where we were going
* we hit an ice patch and the driver did not know how to get through it and took us back to the train stop where we boarded the bus
* talking to the other person who took the commuter bus, we decided we could not catch the next (last) commuter bus anyway
* traffic is slow and bumper-to-bumper anyway along the route we would take to work
* I just gave up and went home
* many schools are closed and such, so in my first 4 weeks of work I still have not been in the client's site (AOL) for 40 hours in one week (first week we were offsite one day for orientation, then the last two weeks both Thursday and Friday they were closed)

Ouch my feet!
10.25.03 (12:46 pm) [edit]
This morning I was up early (6 am exists on Saturdays other than a theoretical construct?). At 8 am I was in DC helping setup for the vegfest (a vegetarian festival) and after that was setup walked around to look at it before going home. On the way I wound up detouring a little bit to catch International Answer's anti-war march at the White House, and pausing at the Jefferson Memorial afterwards. I eventually got home (which is several miles) and am now resting my feet a bit before heading out yet again.

RenFest
09.21.03 (7:32 am) [edit]
Yesterday I went to the MD RenFest with a group from my Wicca Circle. We got there before it opened and were there almost until closing. All in all, a fun day. :)

Only a RenFest ...
09.19.03 (5:34 am) [edit]
I called the Renaissance Festival number yesterday to see if there was any info about their plans for Saturday. I expected a recording, but was surprised by a person answering, so I asked him if they had any plans for Saturday re: Isabelle. His initial reply was to ask if I meant Queen Isabelle BEFORE he realized I was talking about the hurricane.

Saturday, in the park, dum dum dum da dum da dum da dee ...
09.14.03 (7:52 pm) [edit]
Okay, so it was not Saturday, close enuf. YOU find a better song.*pbbt* Today I was going to Rock Creek Park in DC for a cook-out. On the way there, a guy almost collided with me on the train platform. We both got on the train and a few stops later someone else got on with a pentacle and remarked that he liked my buttons and we chatted for a few seconds. When he got off the train the original guy, maybe seeing that I was friendly with a stranger, walked up to me again and I could smell the alchoholic cloud around him. He muttered something and I said I did not understand him (I assume it was in Spanish), so he switched to English: it turns out he wanted to hit on me, said I was gorgeous (err, thanks, but I would rather have someone in full controll of their faculties make that judgement) petted the back of my hand twice, then got off the train. If I had not been so shocked or been traveling with a friend... Anyway, I eventually reached my stop and walked to the cook-out. I had brought some veggie-burgers, so I chowed down with the other vegetarians and talked to various people. Eventually, it was getting time to wrap things up, and I got a ride with two other people back home, where we decided to get Ethiopian food. Andrea had already eaten dinner, so just the three of us went to a nearby place and sat and talked for a bit before/after eating.

What else would I be writing on?
09.11.03 (8:01 am) [edit]
I have been watching some of the coverage of the memorials this morning. At one point I took a break to watch the Sci-Fi channel and an episode of Bablyon 5. The episode they chose was most appropriate: the 'dominant belief system' for Earth is demonstrated: a long line of people, all from different religions (or none). Ironically, the episode I was expecting to be on there today was the last one of the series, which overall contained a feeling of hope, even though it was ending some things. Which was more appropriate? That is an interesting question.
Ob random 9/11/01 memories: At the time I was working just outside of DC on a White House contract ... when we heard about potential attacks there we knew the people that were being evacuated. My partner and I live just south of the Pentagon. She managed to get a ride home that day, but I took a train that runs under that attacked building. The next morning the smoke from the crash was in everything in the halls of our appartment building. Since we are just south of the Pentagon, that also means we are near National Airport as well. Until flights resumed there, something I was used to (planes always in the air around me) just suddenly stopped. What really gelled the events for me was one scene on TV. All it was was a shot of a single shoe in the pile of rubble in NYC.

So that disk did not work ...
09.08.03 (7:57 am) [edit]
Yesterday was my Wicca class and I originally told Andrea I would be back by 7 pm. Well, 11:30ish is only a LITTLE after 7, right? During the class I mentioned that I had not seen 'The Two Towers' yet, and probably would not see it with Andrea until October (even though I had bought the DVD itself right after the day opened the day it was released). The general consensus was that a few of us there would watch it after class, so when it concluded 2 of us made a quick trip to go get a copy. Unfortunately, I had no way of telling Andrea I would be a bit late that evening. After a little more than an hour into the movie the disk started having problems and refused to play anything more after that. After several attempts, cleaning the disk, and several people trying to tell the bugs to begone, we finally gave up and decided to watch another DVD instead ('Bless the Child'). Fortunately, we got through that one and I got home, a bit later than when I planned to be there.

One of the places I volunteer at wants to do a writeup for me for their newsletter, so the other day they did a mini-interview and took my picture. I thought I looked funny in the pic, but it is at http://patriot.net/" title="http://patriot.net/" target="_blank"http://patriot.net/~kharkin/pictures.html

ZZZTT!!!
08.31.03 (6:55 am) [edit]
I went to zapping (electrlosysis) yesterday afternoon ... I got my face cleared but my daily experiences read like a horror novel:
- spend two days without shaving so I can grow out the hair - go to my appointment as a bearded woman - the train ran into difficulties so it took me more than an hour to get there - 90 minutes of having a hot needle shoved in my face - a storm starts during the appointment - the radio announces a weather emergency - asking, I am told 'usually' the machine just turns off if there is a power hit - pay a good fee for the appointment - another extended train trip home - the swelling is still going down
I have lost count of how many hours I have done as I start approaching my third year of doing this. Right now I am only doing one 90 minute session a month due to finances, but I was doing 2.5 hours/week at one point.
After all of this, I still pursue the goal of cleaning my face. It just strikes me as ridiculous when some people think those who would go through this for years are NOT transsexuals.

Ah That Is Goooood Energy
08.29.03 (4:29 pm) [edit]
I just finished eating my dinner out on the deck of our appartment. A storm was passing so I had a nice atmosphere out there to be in. The question I started thinking of was what would be more correct: to refer to it as energy because I am Wiccan or to use the word ionization because I was planning to be a physicist many moons ago? Actually, 'energy' would probably do for both cases. Gee, is it TOO obvious that I like playing around with language?
I had signed a sentence to Andrea (she is Deaf) and included the sign for 'energy' after looking it up in a sign language dictionary. My signing is pretty bad, so I was shocked (no pun intended :) ) when she was able to guess what the sign was even though I had never used before.

More on language
08.28.03 (10:40 am) [edit]
I am heading out in a few hours to do some volunteering at the FMF (Feminist Majority Foundation). It seems that lately I have been doing a lot of volunteering with various places ... I have had a few weeks where I put in 20-30 hours at 3 or 4 different organizations (more if I count travel time). I just like doing things to help. This brings up an interesting point: is this much volunteering an addiction? It aggrees with Webster's definition, which also points out that an addiction can be good, but usually is not. Interesting how slippery the language gets: even knowing the context, I am sure many people had a negative reaction when I first used the word 'addiction'. If this was written in an earlier age that would not be the case that it is today. This particular example has me thinking of the show 'Red Dwarf' and the positive luck viruses. For people who have not seen it, it is a brittish comedy sci-fi show, and in one episode they discover viruses for luck and sexual magnetism.

the politics of language
08.27.03 (9:00 am) [edit]
For those of you unaware, there were several attacks on transwomen here in DC last week, 2 of which were fatal. While all of it was going on, people in the various trans communities (both here and elsewhere) were sharing news of the situation. Now that we are not in a purely reactionary mode, what seems to be the biggest issue people are discussing when there is direct violence against us? Language. Ok, some ways the media refers to trans people are inexusable, but the one that people are complaining about the most is whether the word 'transgender' is a noun or an adjective. In the communities directly affected (Latina and African-American) it is proper to say "a transgender" whereas other communities would say the murdered people were "transgendered women". What we have is a case of one culture trying to say that it's norms apply to other cultures ... and we all know how well that went with the Native Americans. Language is a function of where/when/who you are. If you speak the Queen's English in Harlem you better have your running shoes on. Simmilarly, using ebonics on Wall Street will not project the right image there.
